I hate the split grip on my advantage rod it just makes it too long to use comfortably in the yak. So I am wondering do I get it chopped off or see the guys at charltons for a similar rod with a shorter butt

Yep I am thinking a new rod is in order. Pity I really liked this one.
On a side note Gra I picked up a 3 piece travel rod with a reel I bought but the guy had modified it to end up with the line curving around the rod on the 2nd and 3rd runner from the bottom to make it end up like a spinning rod, WTF would he do this? and how would this perform. I am guessing as long as the line is running through the runners OK under load then it will be all good. I think it would affect the casting distance though.

Spiral Wrap rod Wayne. Supposed to reduce rod-twist. Sounds a bit of a shaft-tug to me but I'm going to build one soon to see for myself.

When are you going to stop buying endless supplies of rods and reels and buy yourself a decent sounder, a few weeks ago you said you couldn't afford a a new sounder now a few weeks later you are talking about buying another rod.
My tip, live with what you have, if you didn't troll so much the actual rod will be ok, learn to cast and retrieve by finding the fish first with the new sounder that you should buy. No chopping butts there ![]() Cheers |

Trolling with the rod is fine it is the casting and retrieving with the long butt that pisses me off. It gets caught on my shirt all the time, annoys the sh*te out of me.
I'd sell the advantage to fund a new rod anyway so it's not like I am out of pocket much.
Yes I know I should upgrade to a colour sounder, but my old one is working great now that I have actually read the manual and tweaked it a bit. So I think you're right, I'll live with what I have, I'll keep the sounder I have and spend my money on new rods and reels . As my old ones are all sh*te .As for cast and retrieving it doesn't work for me , don't know why, I do all the same things as you guys with the same lures. I prefer to troll and catch fish rather than send out millions of casts and get squat. Different strokes for different folks and I don't think we are ever going to see eye to eye on this topic Sel . We are dead set opposites. |

If it is a typical grafite rod with a cork handle and a rubber butt cap you should be able to remove the butt cap and with a fine bladed coping saw cut the excess length off. With only removing 3" there should not be enough of a taper that would prevent you from reusing the butt cap. Two things to remember while doing this: 1st make sure the blade is as fine as you can get and not one of the twisted blades and that you go slow and steady. It may be wise to do a "pratice" cut about 1" in to get the feel of it. 2nd you want to wrap the handle with some tape for support. Wrap it first with some blue painters tape so as to not mess up the cork and then tightly with some strong duct tape( just 2 maybe 3 wraps) to prevent fraying. I would still recomend discussing this with your local shop, espically if this rod is worth more than 30 dollars, and also if you are not familar or comfortable with tools. A copeing saw and blades can be purched pretty cheap at Home Depot or the likes.
